Homecoming 2014 “Called All Hogs Home” as students, faculty, staff and alumni participated in various Homecoming Reid-Hotz-Hall-banner-350pxevents that helped set a new philanthropic record.

“Color Those Hogs 5k,” a new event added to this year’s Homecoming event lineup kicked off Homecoming, Sunday, Oct. 12 with 2,107 runners registered. The cost of the run was a $35 donation or 30 points worth of food items donated. The Student Alumni Association collected a grand total of 29,125 items of food, doubling the amount collected during Homecoming 2013. The items were donated to the Full Circle Campus Food Pantry.

On Tuesday, Oct. 14, 11 Greek and registered student organization pairings competed in the traditional “Homecoming Chili Cook-Off” at the Union Mall. The winners were as follows: first place Zeta Tau Alpha, Sigma Chi and Delta Sigma Theta, second place Kappa Kappa Gamma, Kappa Alpha Order and Alpha Kappa Alpha and third place, Pi Beta Phi, Sigma Phi Epsilon and Alpha Phi Alpha. Approximately $800 was raised and donated to the 7Hills Homeless Shelter from chili handed out for a $1 donation after the competition.

The annual blood drive, co-sponsored by the American Red Cross and University Recreation, was held Wednesday, Oct. 15 and Thursday, Oct. 16, collecting 870 units of blood. Satellite blood drives were offered earlier in the month in Little Rock, St. Louis, Memphis, Tennessee and Tulsa, Oklahoma to engage other U of A alumni and friends who couldn’t make it back to campus.

The traditional “Banner Competition” wrapped up part one of the Homecoming celebration, Thursday, Oct. 16 with 10 Greek pairings and seven residence hall pairings. The winners representing Greek life were Kappa Delta, Sigma Nu, Sigma Pi and Phi Iota Alpha, and the winners representing the residence halls were Reid and Hotz halls.

Returning from fall break, Homecoming activities resumed Wednesday, Oct. 22 with “Thank a Donor.” More than 1,500 students united on the Arkansas Union Mall to sign a giant card and banner in appreciation of the University’s donors. The day ended with 67 teams participating in the “Pigskin Classic,” a 3-on-3 flag football tournament hosted by University Recreation.

The annual “Create-A-Hog” event was held Thursday, Oct. 23 in the Union Connections Lounge. This year competing groups painted canvases representing the “Calling All Hogs Home” theme, compared to the 3-D Hogs as seen in previous years. A total of 21 paintings were on display, raising more than $6,000 for the Student Alumni Association scholarship fund.

Friday, Oct. 24 was a day full of Homecoming events including the Lawn Decorating Competition, Senior Walk Dedication, Alumni Awards Celebration, Dickson Street Parade and Pep Rally. The lawn competition had 10 Greek and six residence hall pairings. The winners representing Greek life were Zeta Tau Alpha, Sigma Chi and Delta Sigma Theta and the winners representing the residence halls were Holcombe-Futrall and the Quads.

In its second year of creation, the Senior Walk Dedication honored the Class of 2013 with a program beginning at Old Main with guest speakers Chancellor G. David Gearhart, Vice Chancellor for University Advancement Chris Wyrick and former Student Alumni Board members Will Hansen, Caitlin Lamb and Tori Pohlner. The program ended with an official ribbon cutting at the start of the 2013 walk located near the Sam M. Walton College of Business. Young alumni were gifted with a 2013 Razorback yearbook and a copy of The University of Arkansas Etched in Stone book. “We hope to grow this tradition as an intricate part of Homecoming as we continue to grow the Homecoming tradition of inviting alumni back – or Calling All Hogs Home,” Ryan Miller, assistant director of student and young alumni programs, said.

The evening concluded with the 70th Annual Alumni Awards Celebration, Dickson Street Parade and Homecoming Pep Rally.

The Dickson Street Parade was led by Grand Marshal Canaan Sandy, 2013 ESPN fan hall of fame inductee, and included floats representing Greek Life, registered student organizations, the Razorback Marching Band, Arkansas Spirit Squads, live mascot Tusk IV, the 2014 Homecoming Court and former Homecoming Queens. Following the parade, the Homecoming Pep Rally was held at the Union Mall, as construction on the Chi Omega Greek Theatre continues.

All of the events led up to game between the Arkansas Razorbacks and University of Alabama-Birmingham Blazers, Saturday, Oct. 25. During half-time, Kali Lantefield, a senior in the Sam M. Walton College of Business, was crowned 2014 Homecoming Queen and escorted by Will French, a senior, pre-medical major. The 2014 Alumni awardees were also recognized on the field during the half-time program. The Razorbacks crushed the Blazers with a final score of 45-17.
